Analysis, Your Key to Success" by Lenny Laskowski Copyright, 1999 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As speakers, we all know the importance of properly preparing our material far enough in advance so we have sufficient time to rehearse and "fine-tune" our speeches. Unfortunately, this is not enough to assure that a speech or presentation will be well received. Your speech preparation must also include gathering some information about your audience and their needs. A well prepared speech delivered before the wrong audience can have the same effect as a speech poorly prepared but better suited to the audience. Both will fail terribly. It is critical that your preparation efforts include some audience analysis. The more you know and understand you audience and their needs, the better you can prepare your speech to assure that you meet those needs. Proper audience analysis will assure that you give the right speech to the right audience. To properly customize the speech, most professional speakers send their clients a multi-page questionnaire or survey in order to gather all the necessary information about them and the speaking event. Using the word "A-U-D-I-E-N-C-E" as an acronym, I have defined some general audience analysis categories that these surveys should include: A_nalysis - who are the audience members? How many will be there? U_nderstanding - What is their knowledge level of the subject? D_emographics - What is their age, sex, educational background? I_nterest - Why will they be there? Who asked them to be there? E_nvironment - Where will I stand? Will everyone in the audience be able to see and hear me? N-eeds - What are the listeners' needs? What are YOUR needs? C_ustomized - How can I custom fit my message to this audience by using specific techniques and anecdotes and by placing an emphasis on a particular aspect of my subject. E_xpectations - What do listeners expect to learn from me? Develop specific questions that fit into each of these eight categories and ask clients or audiences to tell you what they want. Below I have provided you with 20 pieces of information you should know about your audience. You can include these as part of your audience survey sheets. These provide you with some ideas and feel free to add your own to this list. 1. What are the audience's major needs, problems, concerns at this moment? 2. How much does the audience already know about the subject of my presentation? 3. What is the relationship of the audience to me as a speaker? 4. What is the average education level of my audience? 5. What is their average age? 6. What is the ratio of men to women in this audience? 7. Does my audience have a common ethnic background? 8. What are their occupations? 9. How large will the audience be? What will the room layout be like? What are my audiovisual needs? 10. What is the main purpose of the meeting? Are there any special themes? 11. Should my listeners' religious views be taken into consideration? 12. Should my listeners' political persuasion influence by speech? 13. Are there any special organization project or current events that I should consider? 14. Are there any other speakers before or after me on the program? 15. Will there be drinking or eating before my speech? 16. Have other speakers addressed this audience on a similar topic before? 17. What has the audience responded most positively? 18. What has the audience responded least positively? 19. What type of information or supporting will I need for my audience (e.g. statistics, anecdotes, demonstrations..)? 20. How much time will I have to speak?
